Action needed to address Nova Scotia’s gender-based violence epidemic

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s New Democrats are calling on Premier Tim Houston to take immediate and decisive action on gender-based violence.

On Thursday, NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender, along with Status of Women Critic Susan Leblanc and Justice Critic Lina Hamid, sent a letter to the Houston government calling on him to personally meet with the sector and take concrete action after yet another intimate partner homicide over the weekend.

“Every single one of these deaths is a tragedy. Gender-based violence is an epidemic that touches every corner of our province,” said Chender. “We need bold, sustained, systemic action to address this crisis. This is an emergency and we can’t wait any longer.”

Since October, seven people have died in Nova Scotia in confirmed instances of intimate partner violence.

New Democrats are calling on the Houston government to adopt recommendations of the Mass Casualty Commission and the advice of front-line organizations to address gender-based and intimate partner violence. Those recommendations include appointing a gender-based violence commissioner and providing epidemic-level, sustainable funding for those working to prevent and address gender-based violence.

“Advocates and organizations are already doing the important work to provide critical support to survivors and address the root causes of gender-based violence, but they can’t do this work by themselves,” said Chender. “While the Houston government has made promises, we need timelines, details, funding commitments and, most importantly, leadership. The continued tragedies in recent months show just how serious this issue is. We need action, and we need it now.”

Those experiencing intimate partner or gender-based violence can call 211 or 1-855-255-0220 for confidential support, including safety planning, outreach, emergency shelter, and other resources.
