African Heritage Month highlights contribution of African Nova Scotians

HALIFAX– Today, February 1, marks the start of African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia. This month is an important opportunity to highlight the significant contribution of African Nova Scotians.

“This year's theme, "Our Smiles, Our Joy, Our Resilience as African Nova Scotians" presents an opportunity to celebrate the centuries of contribution of African Nova Scotians across Nova Scotia,” said NDP Leader Claudia Chender. “From music and art to education and justice, African Nova Scotians have contributed to and shaped our province's history and culture. We celebrate the communities' importance this month and all year.”

The Nova Scotia NDP continues to work with African Nova Scotian and Black community members to showcase and advance African Nova Scotian communities in our province.

“African Nova Scotians have been part of our province’s culture for centuries and deserve to be recognized and celebrated,” said NDP African Nova Scotian Affairs spokesperson Suzy Hansen. “Black communities have been very clear about the priorities that require action now. February is an important time for everyone, especially the government, to listen, learn, and take action towards a better future.”
