Chender: National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Halifax -- NDP Status of Women Spokesperson Claudia Chender made the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

“Each year on this day, people gather to remember the victims and survivors of gender-based violence and to commit to taking action.
This year especially, in Nova Scotia, we are reminded of this reality by the case of Cassidy Bernard whose former partner was charged in her death earlier this week. A 22-year-old Mi’kmaq woman, Bernard’s life was cut short by violence.
Today is a day for all of us to reflect upon our place in the systems that oppress women and deny them the opportunity to reach their full potential. We are required to think about the structural violence of sexism, racism, poverty, and housing insecurity, and to take action to work towards a world that is safe, just and kind.”
