NDP Agriculture critic Lenore Zann is calling on Minister Keith Colwell to ensure AgriRecovery funding is provided to assist Nova Scotia’s fruit tree growers recover from the after-effects of Tropical Storm Arthur, specifically fire blight trauma.

AgriRecovery is a joint, federal-provincial framework that assists producers recover from “extraordinary costs” associated with natural disasters. Apple fire blight, caused by Tropical Storm Arthur, impacted 90% of Nova Scotia orchards. Previously, Minister Colwell indicated his support for AgriRecovery assistance, but told the Fruit Tree Growers Association that nothing could be finalized until after the federal election.

“Now that the federal election is over, I’m asking Minister Colwell to work with his federal counterpart to secure funding under the AgriRecovery framework,” says Zann. “Nova Scotia is well known across the world for its apples and every step possible must be taken to protect this valuable industry. I have written the Minister on this matter and I’m hopeful he takes immediate action.”
