Liberals wasting valuable time when it comes to job creation

June 8, 2014

NDP Leader Maureen MacDonald says it’s time for Stephen McNeil to make job creation a priority. Last month Nova Scotia lost 5,100 full-time jobs and she says the Liberals’ laissez faire approach to job creation is doing nothing to improve the situation.

“Given the economic challenges our province is facing, I’m deeply concerned with last month’s job figures,” said MacDonald. “Stephen McNeil needs to be doing more to address this situation, otherwise what are already troubling numbers are going to get worse.”

She pointed to the creation of the Invest Nova Scotia board as an example of Liberal inaction.

“Since the Liberals announced the name of their new economic development fund our province has lost 5,100 full-time jobs,” said MacDonald. “Why isn’t the fund up and running yet? Why haven’t the board members been selected? How many opportunities have been missed as a result?”

MacDonald added that Pictou County has been particularly hard hit recently, and she’d like to know what the government intends to do to replace close to 1,000 jobs that have been lost in the area in the last six months.

“Last week Pictou County lost 300 jobs, but I have yet to read or hear a single comment from the Premier or the Minister of Labour about what they are doing to support the families affected. Given the magnitude of the situation I find that surprising,” said MacDonald.
