MacDonald saddened by loss of Michelin jobs in Pictou County

(Halifax, NS) NDP Leader Maureen MacDonald is expressing deep disappointment at the news Michelin is eliminating 500 jobs at its Granton plant in Pictou County.

“Right now my thoughts are with the workers and their families,” said MacDonald. “This is a devastating blow for Pictou County on all counts. As someone who grew up just down the road in Antigonish, I was shocked and saddened when I found out.”

MacDonald says in the coming weeks she will be asking the government to provide more information about conversations it had with Michelin leading up to this announcement, but for today her main concern is ensuring the families affected are able to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

“I was somewhat encouraged to read that many employees will be able to relocate to other Michelin plants in Waterville and Bridgewater,” said MacDonald. “That being said, a plan needs to be put in place to help families and the local economy overcome the loss of these jobs as soon as possible. I hope the government is working on such a plan as we speak. The entire province needs to work together to help Pictou County recover.”
