Start: September 13, 2014 7:00 PM

Join us as two fabulous local authors read from their award-winning books. Delicious desserts and fair-trade coffee included and a cash bar for anyone who wants something a little stronger.
Jim Williams will read from Rock Reject, winner of the inaugural Beacon Award for Social Justice Literature. Rock Reject tells the story of a man, stricken with grief, who abandons his life in Toronto for one of exile and desolation in rock reject, a ghastly mountain-top asbestos mine in northern British Columbia. http://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/rock-reject
Susan Dodd will read from The Ocean Ranger: Remaking the Promise of Oil, winner of the Atlantic Book Award for Scholarly Writing. On February 15, 1982, the oil rig Ocean Ranger sank off the coast of Newfoundland taking the entire crew of eighty-four men — including the author’s brother — down with it. The Ocean Ranger: Remaking the Promise of Oil maps the socio-political processes of its aftermath, when power, money and collective hopes for the future revised the story of corporate indifference and betrayal of public trust into a “lesson learned” by an heroic industry advancing technology in the face of a brutal environment. http://fernwoodpublishing.ca/book/the-ocean-ranger
