Health care crisis continues: Glace Bay ER closed all of July

SYDNEY- The emergency room at the Glace Bay Hospital will be closed for all of July, another sign of the Liberals’ failure to address the ongoing health care crisis in Cape Breton, and across Nova Scotia.

“As part of the Liberals’ plan to close two hospitals in Cape Breton, the Glace Bay hospital is supposed to be expanded. How can that happen if the Liberals can’t even keep the emergency room open?” said Tammy Martin, NDP Health and Wellness spokesperson. “The NDP is the only party committed to keeping community hospitals and emergency rooms open in Cape Breton.”

Last week, doctors at Baddeck recently sounded the alarm about how constant emergency room closures in communities across Cape Breton are adding pressure and stress to other facilities on the island.

“It’s time for Derek Momberquette and Geoff MacLellan to admit that there is a health care crisis in Cape Breton and stand up to Stephen McNeil,” said Martin. The people of Cape Breton deserve no less from their representatives.”

The McNeil Liberals announced the plan to close the New Waterford Consolidated and Northside General hospitals a year ago this week. Tammy Martin and NDP Leader Gary Burrill have signed a declaration committing to keeping the hospitals in New Waterford and North Sydney open. Neither Mombourquette or MacLellan, or PC Leader Tim Houston would sign the declaration.
