NDP calling on McNeil government to release Seniors’ Pharmacare analysis

January 22, 2016

The McNeil government needs to immediately release to the public its internal analysis underpinning the recent changes announced to the Seniors’ Pharmacare Program, says NDP Leader Maureen MacDonald.

“Many seniors are in for a big shock when they open their 2016 Pharmacare renewal notice and see their premiums have jumped from $424 to $1200, or as much as $2400 for a couple” says MacDonald. “I’m pleased to see that more seniors at the lower income level will be exempted from the premiums, but this does not excuse the McNeil government from having to explain to tens of thousands of middle-income seniors why their premiums are going up dramatically.”

“Drug coverage in 2016 should be part of the universal health care system, and the Liberal government should be working to eliminate premiums for everyone, not creating a two-tiered system.”
