Nova Scotians deserve answers on Houston government’s secretive cuts: NDP

HALIFAX –Today, NSNDP Labour Critic Paul Wozney made the following statement about the Houston government’s cuts to the civil service:

“People now are losing their jobs. The Houston government continues to refuse to explain what’s happening – these are clearly choices made without any plan or consideration of impact.

For months, ministers have been unable to answer basic questions about the cuts in their budget, and in some cases they didn’t even seem to know what was being cut or what the impact would be. It’s now been more than a month after their budget passed, and they still can’t provide any answers.

Nova Scotians understand that sometimes hard decisions have to be made, but they deserve to know why and how their government is making those choices and how their families will be affected. Families and workers can’t build their lives here when they have no idea what the future holds, or what services will be on the chopping block next with this Houston government. Their short-sighted decision-making is hurting people’s livelihoods.

The very least Nova Scotians should be able to expect is clear answers from their government.”
