HALIFAX – Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie should condemn comments made by MLA Larry Harrision at a Community Services Committee that people on social assistance could make extra money by picking up garbage on the side of local highways.

“The only word I can think of for these comments is Trump-ish,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. “Jamie Baillie should retract these comments made on behalf of the Conservative Caucus. If not, I invite him and the entire PC caucus to pick up highway trash themselves.”

A single adult on social assistance currently receives between $555 and $790 per month for all expenses. A single parent with one child receives just $958 per month for rent, utilities, food, clothing, and all other expenses. Many people with disbilities rely on social assistance as their only available source of income.

“We have 13,000 children visiting food banks, many of them from families on social assistance,” said Burrill. “I would hope that it would be more important for politicians of all political stripes to address this crisis, instead of disrespecting some of our most vulnerable citizens.”
