Celebrating Pride

July 18, 2016

This summer, communities across Nova Scotia are celebrating Pride–a time to proudly acknowledge diversity in gender and sexual orientation, and the achievements of the LGBTQ movement.13776038_840144879448726_595907902441306337_n

On Saturday I had the honour of taking part with a contingent of New Democrats in the first-ever Truro Pride parade. Our Party was well represented by Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River MLA Lenore Zann, the Colchester EDAs, Party president Bill Matheson, and the Nova Scotia Young New Democrats. It was an absolutely joy-filled occasion that resonated with the themes of inclusion, solidarity and justice.

This coming weekend (July 23) Halifax Pride will hold its annual parade, and on August 6 the Pride Cape Breton Society is holding one in Sydney. There will be an NDP presence at both events, and it will be wonderful if you are able to join us.

The NDP has long supported the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer persons. In 2010, our New Democratic government was the first to raise the rainbow Pride flag at Province House. In 2012, we added gender identity and gender expression to the Human Rights Act. And in 2013, we made funding available for gender affirming surgery.

Our Party continues to strive to be an active ally. At our Policy Convention in June we passed a resolution to support the wellbeing of transgender individuals, specifically with regard to the prevention of discrimination in health care and the government ID application process.

I am proud to represent a Party that embraces all sexual and gender identities–and is committed to the struggle against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

In solidarity and hope,
