Child protection layoffs place families at risk
January 28, 2015
(Shelburne, NS) The Liberal government’s decision to remove child welfare services in Barrington places vulnerable families at risk, says NDP MLA Sterling Belliveau. He is worried about the impact the layoff of three child protection agents could have on the region.
“It makes no sense to remove child welfare services in a region where jobs are hard to find and many families are struggling to get by,” says Belliveau. “It demonstrates a complete lack of compassion for Minister Joanne Bernard and the Liberal government to target low income families and children with their austerity measures.”
Belliveau says the layoffs also break a commitment Minister Joanne Bernard made to Nova Scotians. On April 17, 2014 in Question Period she said: “No front-line services organizations in Nova Scotia are looking at any funding cuts. In fact, quite a few of them have looked at a bump in their funding since this government has come in.”
“Clearly the Liberal government has broken another promise,” adds Belliveau.
