Wilson disappointed with McNeil government’s lack of support for Commissionaires

NDP MLA Dave Wilson is disappointed the Liberal majority on the Veteran’s Affairs committee rejected a motion to support military veterans employed by Commissionaires Nova Scotia.
Today in the committee Wilson asked that a letter be sent to the Minister of Military Relations, Premier Stephen McNeil, asking that he explore giving Commissionaires the first right of refusal on all provincial building security contracts. The policy already exists at the Federal level. Unfortunately, the Liberal majority on the committee rejected the motion.
“Over 60 per cent of Commissionaires in Nova Scotia are veterans and former RCMP officers. These are individuals who’ve dedicated themselves to helping people, and as a province I think we have an obligation to support them after they retire,” said Wilson.
He added, “I appreciate the fact that the government needs to examine a policy before adopting it. But what bothers me the most is that I only asked the Liberal government to explore the option, and they rejected the motion outright. Our veterans deserve better than that.”
