NDP introduce bill to prevent cancers caused by HPV

March 26, 2015

NDP MLA Gordie Gosse will introduce a bill today in the Nova Scotia Legislature that will help protect men from cancer caused by the Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV).

The bill expands the provincial HPV vaccination program to include boys and young men. Currently the program is only available to females aged nine to 26.

“The type of cancer I was diagnosed with almost a year ago was caused by HPV,” said Gosse. “I don’t want others to have to go through what I went through. By providing the HPV vaccine to boys the province can help prevent a lot of serious health problems for a future generation of men.”

Research suggests HPV causes at least 95% of all cervical cancer cases in women and an increasing number of throat and neck cancers in men.
