HALIFAX – News that the McNeil Liberals will be running partisan ads to undermine teachers, along with a coordinated government media blitz, shows the Liberals are attempting to force a teachers’ strike.
“If Stephen McNeil has something to say to teachers, he should say it at the bargaining table,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill.
Yesterday a new group, Parents for Teachers, held a press conference at Province House to express support for teachers. The group has grown to over 2000 members on Facebook. An online survey with over 4000 responses in the Halifax Metro showed 87 per cent of respondents trust teachers, not the Liberals, on education. Last week, a letter signed by over 300 students was also circulated to MLAs expressing support for teachers in the current labour dispute.
“The public is clearly on the side of teachers,” said Burrill. “Lashing out with attack ads will not solve this crisis. A solution can only be found by listening to parents and teachers.”
