Liberals tinker with child care while centres close

For Immediate Release

After more than 20 years of operation, Dalhousie University will close the daycare at its agricultural campus in Bible Hill on Sept. 2. A spokesperson for the school said parents would have to pay more in order for the centre to be financially viable.

Lenore Zann, NS NDP critic for Education and Early Childhood Development and MLA for Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River, is calling on the Liberal government to live up to their election promise of providing support for families.

Earlier this month the Liberal government announced their plan for child care in the province. However, even with this new investment, the government contribution falls short of what is needed.

“The high cost of child care has meant many women are forced to make the impossible decision of whether or not they can afford to return to work after having children,” said Zann. “Parents in Nova Scotia are the main funders of child care paying between $10,000 and $12,000 for a space.”
