McNeil Liberals abandoning problem gamblers
July 21, 2016
HALIFAX – A report released today about gaming revenue confirms that VLT revenue is being driven up by the elimination of the My Play responsible gaming program by the Liberal government.
“This Liberal government seems to be washing its hands of any strategy to address problem gambling,” said NDP Health Critic Dave Wilson. “This issue isn’t going away. Nova Scotians deserve to know what the government’s plan is to address gambling addiction.”
Revenue from VLTs was up by $19 million in 2015-16 from 2014-15. In 2014, the Liberal government eliminated My Play, a program that tried to assist problem. In 2015, the Auditor General also criticized the government for not spending all of the resources allocated to help problem gamblers.
“The government would rather turn a profit than ensure problem gamblers get the support they need,” said Wilson.
