HALIFAX – NDP Leader Gary Burrill is calling on the McNeil Liberals to make the investments needed in seniors’ care, education, and opportunities for young people after today’s address from the Minister of Finance to the Chamber of Commerce about the upcoming budget.

“We have serious issues in our hospitals, our schools, and our communities because Stephen McNeil and his government have refused to make the necessary investments our province needs,” said Burrill. “Today’s address from the Minister of Finance celebrated cuts to nursing homes, crowded and undersupported classrooms, and massive youth job losses as though these are things to be proud of.”

In the last two budgets, the McNeil government has cut a total of $8 million from nursing homes, cut $40 million in assistance to new graduates, and underspent the budget for hospital infrastructure by half. In that same time, food bank use has increase by 20 per cent, and the province has lost 6,500 jobs for young people.

“The people of Nova Scotia want to know that they can get the health care they need, that their children are getting a good education, and that there is enough money to keep a roof over their head and put food on the table,” said Burrill.
