NDP Leader expresses support for journalists as Cape Breton Star shut down

For immediate release.
SYDNEY – NDP Leader Gary Burrill is re-affirming support for striking members of the Halifax Typographical Union at the Chronicle Herald after the newspaper announced that it will be shutting down the Cape Breton Star.
“People of this province deserve to be treated with respect by their employers,” said Burrill. “Given the length of this dispute, I hope that Stephen McNeil will support these journalists and their families and suspend government advertising in the Chronicle Herald until the strike is over.”
Unionized journalists at the Chronicle Herald went on strike in January. Since then, the NDP has not participated in interviews with replacement freelance reporters hired by the Herald, nor submitted any press releases or opinion pieces to the newspaper.
The striking journalists have been operating a separate news website, LocalXpress.ca.
