Halifax, NS – Today, the Nova Scotia NDP is recognizing the Day of Mourning for those who have died, become injured, or fallen ill on the job. The day is being observed by over 80 countries across the globe.

Newly elected NSNDP leader Gary Burrill will be speaking a ceremony at 11 am at Province House to mark the day. He will be joined by Sackville-Cobequid MLA and NDP Labour critic Dave Wilson. Gary will then head to Lunenburg this evening for a ceremony at the Fishermen’s Memorial at 6 pm, where he will be the keynote speaker.

“Last year, there were twenty-seven workplace fatalities in our province,” said Gary this morning. “We need to strengthen our Occupational Health and Safety regulations in order to avoid these preventable tragedies.

“Our goal must be a culture of enforcement of Occupation Health and Safety to which there are no exceptions.” said Burrill.
