NDP questions Premier on bargaining with teachers

For Immediate Release

HALIFAX – During Question Period today, the NDP called for answers regarding the McNeil government’s refusal to return to the bargaining table with teachers in the province to address teachers’ concerns about the state of Nova Scotia’s classrooms.

“Stephen McNeil says he will not return to the bargaining table with teachers,” said Dave Wilson, NDP Labour Critic. “The only way this dispute can be resolved is by sitting down and listening to what teachers have to say.”

The NDP also introduced Nancie de la Chevotiere, a teacher at Halifax West Halifax School, who was in the gallery for Question Period.

Teachers have raised concerns over the need for more support for students with special needs, English as a second language training, resource and learning centres, and mental health issues in schools.

“New Democrats trust teachers as the experts on what is happening in our classrooms,” said Gary Burrill, Leader of the NDP.  “Stephen McNeil needs to pontificate less about what he will not do in public sector negotiations, and explain more what he will do to improve conditions in our classrooms.”
