Province needs to put a halt to HRM’s Sackville landfill plans

September 24, 2014

(Sackville, NS) NDP MLA Dave Wilson is asking the Liberal government to step in and put an end to Halifax Regional Municipality’s proposal to ship and treat waste leachate at the Sackville landfill.

Today, in an open letter Wilson asked Environment Minister Randy Delorey to inform his staff to reject any requests from HRM to change the existing permit for the Sackville landfill. A provincial amendment to the landfill permit is required if HRM wishes to ship leachate to the site for treatment.

“The community already hosted the landfill once, it shouldn’t have to carry part of that burden again,” says Wilson. “I’m requesting the Minister use his prerogative and order staff not to accept or approve any request from HRM to change or alter the existing permit.”

Wilson also asked that the Minister inform HRM of his intentions as soon as possible to relieve the anxiety currently being experienced by residents.
