Statement from NDP Leader Gary Burrill on storm damage in Cape Breton
October 11, 2016
For immediate release.
HALIFAX –NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement regarding the storm damage in Cape Breton:
On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Nova Scotia, I want to extend our sympathy and concern for the residents of Cape Breton who are experiencing extended power outages, flooding and property damage as a result of the remnants of Hurricane Matthew.
Our deepest respect and appreciation are also extended to the hundreds of emergency personnel, utility workers, and volunteers who are working diligently to ensure the continued safety of everyone in Cape Breton.
The NDP supports CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke in his call for federal and provincial disaster relief funding to repair infrastructure and address property damage.
Evaluation will be needed of the damage to communities across Cape Breton, including First Nations communities. Reports of major damage and contaminated water are very worrisome. The NDP joins its voice with all those calling for the release of federal funds to assist with repairs.
With everyone in Nova Scotia, we are grateful that yesterday’s severe weather has not resulted in serious injury or loss of life.
