Statement on the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal ruling on the Electoral Boundaries Commission
January 26, 2017
For immediate release.
HALIFAX – NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement on the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal ruling on the Electoral Boundaries Commission:
As the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal decision has acknowledged, the question of balancing voter parity and effective representation for the Acadian and African Nova Scotian communities of the province, is a difficult and complex one. Our NDP government caucus grappled with this question and did our best to come up with a balanced and fair solution. In what is a well-reasoned decision that must be respected, the court has ruled that our efforts were inadequate and in error. We accept this decision, and given the decision, our caucus calls on the government to immediately re-constitute the Electoral Boundaries Commission and rectify this situation before the next election. The NDP is prepared for the Legislature to reconvene should that be required.
