Liberals fail to be accountable and transparent

January 20, 2015

Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Michel Samson needs to explain why he didn’t tell the truth about $2.5 million in provincial funding for Nova Star Cruises when questioned by media last week, says NDP MLA Denise Peterson-Rafuse.

On Thursday, Jan. 15 following a Cabinet meeting, Minister Samson told reporters that no additional funds had been provided to the ferry operator since October (see video). However, as reported in today’s Chronicle Herald, Samson provided an additional $2.5 million to the company on Dec. 23, but the funding was never made public.

“This raises serious doubts about Minister Samson and the Liberal government’s commitment to transparency,” said Peterson-Rafuse. “To make matters worse, not only did the Minister fail to tell the truth, today he’s refusing to explain his actions to the Chronicle Herald.”

As of today, the Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism has not posted the additional Nova Star Cruises funding on its “accountability reporting” web site.
