Liberals block NDP motion to hear from Protocol Office on policies for honouring veterans

NDP MLA Dave Wilson says he is disappointed that his request to have the provincial Protocol Office appear at the Veterans Affairs committee has been blocked by a Liberal majority on the committee.

Wilson requested the Protocol Office appear to discuss best practices for honouring veterans at a committee meeting today, Jan. 8. Wilson said he was particularly disheartened given the committee had just received a presentation from a member of the Canadian Forces about the importance of commemorating fallen Nova Scotia soldiers from the Afghanistan mission.

“We’ve had situations recently where policies for things like lowering flags for fallen servicemen have been unclear. I think everyone needs a clear understanding of how we can and should be showing our respect and understanding what provincial protocols are in place would help us to do that,” said Wilson.

In October, residents in Sydney were upset with the province for not lowering flags outside the Sydney Provincial Building after the deaths of two Canadian soldiers, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.

“Really, it’s the least we could do for our veterans considering all they’ve done for us,” said Wilson.
