Gosse: Veterans Affairs Committee can’t wait

January 31, 2014

(Sydney, NS) NDP Sydney MLA Gordie Gosse is requesting Federal Minister of Veterans Affairs Julian Fantino appear before the Nova Scotia Veterans Affairs Committee to address the closure of the Veterans Affairs office in Sydney.

“Our veterans still have many questions about this issue and they deserve answers,” said Gosse.

“Today I’m asking Committee Chair Pam Eyking to move up the first meeting of the Committee on Veterans Affairs so we can address this issue promptly,” said Gosse.

The first meeting of the Committee is scheduled for February 11. All other committees have already had their first meeting.

Gosse says he raised the issue of the office closure in the fall sitting of the Legislature, has written letters of concern, and reached out to local veterans who have been busy rallying against the cuts, especially during the month of January.

After today veterans in Cape Breton will no longer be able to visit the local Veterans Affairs office to get the support they need.

“I’m sure the Chair can appreciate how urgent this situation is. Also, I understand Minister Fantino has a busy schedule but we’ll do everything we can to accommodate him,” said Gosse.

“Even if the federal government refuses to reverse these cuts we still need to be at the table talking about how we can support veterans in lieu of this service being removed.”
