We Support #NSFilmJobs
May 3, 2016
Support for arts and culture has long been part of the NDP’s core values. We know that in order to have a thriving society and economy, we must invest in our creative industries.
Over the past year we have been hearing from many citizens who are dismayed with the Liberal government’s cutting of the Film Tax Credit. Any hopes for a reversal of this decision were dashed with the release of the provincial budget two weeks ago.
Since the budget’s release we have been in conversation with Erika Beatty, the new Executive Director of Screen Nova Scotia, as well as other members of the film and television industry. In these conversations we have discussed how the NDP can best support the industry now, given that Stephen McNeil has dismissed the recent economic impact report by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. This document proves that in 2014 (before the Liberals cut the Film Tax Credit) Nova Scotia’s film/TV industry generated 3,200 jobs and contributed $180 million to the Gross Domestic Product.
Members of the film/TV industry attended Province House last Friday to observe our Party’s questions to Business Minister Furey about the urgency for local TV producers to access the Eastlink Fund for shows like Studio Black, a locally created series which aired on CBC last year, approved for a second season, and nominated for several awards by both ACTRA (the actors’ union) and Screen Nova Scotia. The series provides approximately 50 jobs to many African Nova Scotians in positions both behind and in front of the camera. This is the very kind of production Nova Scotia needs–yet Nova Scotia Business Inc. is making it almost impossible for Studio Black to access the funding they need in order to be able to meet CBC’s timelines for production.
We must re-invest in our creative economy, and ensure that any changes going forward are made in consultation with the arts industry. The Nova Scotia NDP will fight to ensure that this is so.
