NSNDP leader Claudia Chender talks housing, health care in Digby-Annapolis

DIGBY –Claudia Chender, leader of the Nova Scotia NDP, is touring Digby-Annapolis today to speak with community members about health care, housing, the cost of living, and other issues affecting the region.

The Digby General was operating far above capacity last week. This and an emergency department closure over the long weekend highlights the seriousness of the issue.

“Nova Scotians are extremely concerned about the state of health care in the province,” said Chender. “The Houston government must do more to ensure Nova Scotians are attached to a primary care provider and can get the care they need when they need it.”

The cost-of-living crisis is also a large concern in the area. Annapolis County has the highest poverty rate in the province at more than 12 per cent, according to the 2021 Census.

“It is unacceptable for so many Nova Scotians to be struggling to afford the basics or living in poverty. Nova Scotia families deserve a break,” said Chender. “The Houston government could make a real difference for families by increasing social supports, reining in Nova Scotia Power, and ensuring that people can find and keep housing they can afford.”
