NSNDP Leader statement on International Women’s Day

HALIFAX –The following is a statement from NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender ahead of International Women’s Day on Saturday:

“This International Women’s Day we call for action on the issues that are impacting women across Nova Scotia every day.
Governing is about priorities and this government is not prioritizing the needs of women and gender-diverse people across Nova Scotia.
Tim Houston has left money on the table with Ottawa when he could have ensured that birth control is available to everyone who needs it.
Other provinces are moving toward take-home cancer screening tests for HPV. Nova Scotia must do the same – and quickly.
The crisis in affordable housing is disproportionately affecting women, especially survivors of intimate partner violence. And women-led households feel the impact of economic shocks like Trump’s tariffs and the rising costs of food, energy, and housing more deeply than others.
In the last few weeks, women in Nova Scotia concerned around gender-based violence, access to health care, and environmental sustainability have been dismissed as ‘special interests.’ This is not how you unite people at a time when unity is key.
There have been important wins for women and there is still a lot we have left to fight for. Together, we will continue the work to build a stronger world for the women and girls of Nova Scotia and beyond.”
