Cape Breton Students Explore Job Opportunities in IT and Analytics Sector
February 21, 2013
Young people in Cape Breton are test driving exciting IT and analytics training to get ready for high-paying, high-tech jobs.
“The future for IT professionals in Nova Scotia is bright,” said Deputy Premier Frank Corbett. “These students are in the right place to get the tools they need for a prosperous future in their communities.”
Students at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Marconi Campus, today, Feb. 21, toured hardware labs and work spaces with Cape Breton Nova MLA Gordie Gosse, senior location executive of IBM Cal Gosse and representatives from the college.
In November, IBM chose Nova Scotia as the best province to locate its only Global Delivery Centre in Canada. This positions Nova Scotia as a leader in innovation and analytics, and helps to attract more investment, more business, and more jobs.
“Hearing that major companies like IBM are coming to Nova Scotia to build their business makes me excited for my future here at home,” said second-year IT student Mark Fraser at the NSCC Marconi campus. “I am excited that IBM is coming to talk to IT programs here at Marconi campus. We get to hear from them about the opportunities that will be available in the sector, and I potentially have the chance to meet my future employer.”
IBM expects to create hundreds of jobs over the next eight years, and the province is focused on getting people ready for those opportunities.
“Today’s test drive is an excellent example of how the province, NSCC, universities in Nova Scotia and IBM are working together to support learners and their career choices,” said Don Bureaux, president of NSCC. “IBM chose our province because they believe in our students and workforce. Today is about connecting Nova Scotians to programs that will give students a competitive advantage and the skills needed to fill some of the best jobs this province has ever seen.”
During the test drive, participants are also learning about courses, co-op opportunities and student services that are offered.
