Thoughts With Arichat After Fire

August 23, 2013

Premier Darrell Dexter says his thoughts and concerns are with the community of Arichat today, Aug. 23, after an early morning fire destroyed the Premium Seafoods ground fish plant, a major employer in the area.

The province reached out to the owner of the plant to ensure employees and their families are aware of the supports available to them during this difficult time.

“I know that workers and their families are very concerned right now as there are still many unknowns,” said Premier Dexter. “I want to assure people that the province will be there to make sure they have the support they need.”

There are supports available through Service Canada and the Department of Community Services that will help eligible families get financial support in place. In the longer term, the province will work with the employer and the area career resource centre to offer a range of services, including counselling, training, career planning, job search, and skills upgrading.

“The impact of this loss will be felt by many families in the community. It is important for the region and the province to help the area overcome this incredible loss and rebuild as soon as possible,” said Premier Dexter.

The Premium fish plant has long been an important part of the community, not only for the service it provides but for the people it employs.

“You have my word that the province will do its part to support the workers, their families and the businesses in Arichat, that contribute so much to the economy and the way of life here in Nova Scotia,” said Frank Corbett, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating the fire. No details are available regarding cause.
