CFS calls on government to pass NDP’s Safer Universities and Colleges Act

The Canadian Federation of Students is calling on the McNeil government to pass the NDP’s Safer Universities and Colleges Act (Bill 114). That Act, introduced last spring, requires all Nova Scotia colleges and universities to develop sexual assault policies in partnership with students and review the policies on a regular basis.

Today the NDP Caucus was presented with over 1500 postcards from the Canadian Federation of Students calling on the McNeil government to pass Bill 114.

“Students and their families need to be assured that universities and colleges are doing everything possible to prevent sexual violence” says NDP Labour and Advanced Education critic Dave Wilson. “While many positive steps have been taken by various institutions in recent years, there needs to be a province-wide standard, and that’s what this bill provides.”

“We’ve told the Minister time and again that measures addressing sexualized violence on campus need to be enshrined in legislation,” said CFS-NS Chairperson, Michaela Sam. “We’ve made it clear that the University MOU is a document that’s been ignored in the past and has an expiration date, and is therefore no place to deal with such an important issue.”
