McNeil government allows $1620 tuition increase at Saint Mary’s University
October 23, 2015
NDP MLA Dave Wilson says today’s news that Saint Mary’s University is raising tuition by as much as $1620 dollars over the next three years ($540 annually), further highlights the Liberal government’s broken promise to make university education more affordable.
“At a time when we should be doing everything possible to keep our young people here in Nova Scotia, the McNeil government has done the opposite by allowing tuition to rise at unprecedented levels,” says Wilson. “Instead of forcing universities to reduce their executive costs, the Advanced Education Minister, Kelly Regan, lifted the tuition cap, which places the financial burden entirely on the backs of students. This is the wrong approach.”
While in opposition Kelly Regan was quoted as saying “I don’t know if economists would think that (raising tuition) would be a recipe for anything other than disaster.” During the 2013 election campaign, the Liberals promised to “work to make university more affordable.”
