McNeil Liberals need to address rash of ER closures

January 13, 2015

NDP Health critic Dave Wilson says the McNeil government needs to take action to address a rash of emergency room closures plaguing the province in recent months.

“Practically every day we are hearing about emergency room closures – from Shelburne to New Waterford. It’s time for the Health Minister to turn his attention to these issues,” said Wilson.

“Patient care has to be priority number one, always.”

Wilson’s comments come in reaction to the closure of the emergency room at the Glace Bay General Hospital yesterday, Jan. 12, when it reached capacity and was unable to accept more patients. The ER was closed for about 12 hours.

Last week the ER at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney also closed when it reached capacity. It reopened Friday.

Wilson says it’s important the government remain committed to front-line care while amalgamating district health authorities.

“First and foremost, government is responsible for ensuring people have access to care. When that access starts to deteriorate, like we’ve been seeing, it’s time for the government to assess what they’re doing and find a way to improve things,” said Wilson.
