Mancini calls for improved housing supports in Cape Breton Regional Municipality

For Immediate Release
Halifax, NS – NSNDP Community Services critic Marian Mancini is calling on the McNeil government to improve access to safe and affordable housing in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). A report submitted to the CBRM Council on Tuesday showed that at least 137 people experience homelessness in the Municipality.
“The McNeil government has proven they are not focused on affordable housing in Nova Scotia or the more than 4000 people waiting on the affordable housing wait list,” said Mancini. “Last year alone, the McNeil government underspent on the affordable housing budget by $6 million while Nova Scotians are living on the streets.”
Most concerning, the report found that youth 24 years old and under make up about 19% of the homeless population and another 24% of the homeless population are over the age of 55 years old.
“Cape Breton’s young people and seniors deserve a roof over their heads – simply put. I am looking to the McNeil government to take immediate action on these troubling findings.”
