Martin secures NDP nomination in Cape Breton Centre
June 1, 2015
Tammy Martin is the NDP candidate in the upcoming Cape Breton Centre provincial by-election. An employee at the Provincial Health Authority in Sydney, Martin secured the nomination at a meeting held earlier tonight.
Martin says this by-election is about sending a message to Stephen McNeil that he needs to stop picking fights with health care workers and start focusing on improving health care.
“Cape Breton has lost it’s voice in our health care system under the McNeil government,” says Martin. “Emergency rooms are overcrowded and closed, beds are being taken up by patients who need home care or long term care, health care workers are overworked and the Liberals have no plan to improve the situation. This needs to change.”
NDP Leader Maureen MacDonald says Martin will work hard to ensure the government creates more opportunities for young people to stay and work in Cape Breton.
“Stephen McNeil has no plan to grow Cape Breton’s economy and he’s invested next to nothing to create jobs in the region,” says MacDonald. “Meanwhile the Cape Breton Rail line is on the brink of being torn up and tuition at Cape Breton University is about to increase by 20%. Cape Breton Centre needs an MLA like Tammy Martin who will work hard to keep jobs and young people in this part of the province.”
