Mental health care system needs more resources
July 8, 2015
Reversing Liberal cuts and ensuring adequate resources are available to patients and their families, need to be the top priorities in our mental health care system says NDP Leader Maureen MacDonald.
MacDonald is also questioning why the McNeil government has failed to update the mental health strategy since taking office?
“In 2012 the NDP released Nova Scotia’s first Mental Health and Addictions Strategy and that same year the federal government also released a mental health care strategy,” says MacDonald. “In the past decade there have been numerous inquiries and consultations held about how to improve our mental health care system and plans have been put in place. Now is the time for action and it’s disappointing the McNeil government has scaled back the mental health strategy while cutting funding to organizations that provide valuable support.”
She adds, “at this point in time the issue with our mental health care system is not a lack of studies, it’s lack of resources because the McNeil government has frozen the health care budget.”
