Thousands more Nova Scotians turning to food banks under Tim Houston’s watch
HALIFAX — Today, Lina Hamid, NSNDP Critic for Opportunities and Social Development, made the following statement about Food Banks Canada’s 2026 Hunger Count report:
“Food bank visits in Nova Scotia have increased by a staggering 78 per cent since the Houston government was elected in 2021. That's thousands more people struggling to put food on the table, including working families who are doing everything they can to get by.
No one should have to choose between paying their rent, heating their home or buying groceries. These numbers show just how difficult life has become for too many Nova Scotians under Tim Houston’s watch.
Nova Scotians deserve better. We need real action to make life more affordable, including lowering grocery costs, protecting renters and creating a poverty reduction strategy.”
