Tuition relief needed as NSCC announces three years of fee increases

Halifax-- The NDP is calling on the Liberal government to make post-secondary education more accessible. Today, the Nova Scotia Community College announced it will increase tuition rates 3 per cent in each of the next three years.

“We know that students in Nova Scotia struggle with some of the highest debt loads in the country. Today’s announcement will only make this trend worse,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. “We need to make our colleges easier to access, not harder. People shouldn’t be held back by the cost of training which in many cases is necessary for job advancements, or to get a job at all.”

The NDP believes tuition fees at NSCC should be free, eliminating financial barriers to a community college education.

“The cost of post-secondary education is a barrier for many people, and any increase in cost will mean even more people can’t go to college and get the education they need,” said Burrill. “Making tuition free at NSCC would open up doors for many people and encourage countless young people to stay in Nova Scotia, instead of moving away to work.”
