Belliveau: Fish Packers Association Playing Politics
September 9, 2013
(Shelburne, N.S.) NDP candidate and Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau says comments by Marc Surette, executive director of the Nova Scotia Fish Packers Association, about BlueWave are just pure politics.
“It’s ironic over the last four years the government has supported over and over again the members of the Fish Packers Association with funding, including the association president’s company Sable Fish Packers. But when the NDP protects 70 jobs in Port Mouton they are suddenly against it.”
Belliveau says the fleet separation policy is at the heart of Surette’s comments.
“Mr. Surette was quoted as saying that Senator Stephen Greene ‘hit the nail on the head’ when he called for the abolishment of the fleet separation policy. Surette knows the NDP will always stand for the fleet separation policy in order to protect the independence of our lobster fishermen and good jobs in rural communities. We’re committed to fighting for our province’s fishermen in Ottawa.”
